Historic Vessel Maintenance and Restoration

BMT specializes in supporting historic maritime vessels. Our team of Naval Architects, Marine, Environmental, and Systems Engineers are well-versed in all aspects of vessel maintenance and restoration.

The museum ship is in a class all its own. Each ship is unique and allows us a look back into the depths of America’s maritime history, ranging from great battles in our fight for freedom, to reaching back into the depths of North America’s transportation history. With that longevity come the challenges of keeping our “floating past” preserved for future generations.

Our team of Naval Architects, Marine, Environmental, and Systems Engineers are well-versed in all aspects of vessel maintenance and restoration, including:

  • Preservation
  • Design and modification
  • Safety
  • Environmental compliance and planning (NEPA)
  • Construction
  • Maintenance planning and disposal

Modifications for Public Usage

Working ships are not naturally equipped to handle the visiting public. Our engineers have experience with the modification of some of our nation’s greatest historic ships, striking a balance of historic integrity and safety and accessibility for visitors. In order to suit museum requirements, modifications can include:

  • Structure strengthening
  • Improving access
  • Improving fire safety
  • Accommodating visitor loads
  • Accommodating exposure to weather conditions
  • Gangplank and tie-up retrofitting

Restoration and Maintenance

Maintaining a vessel that has been in use for decades longer than it was designed requires vigilance, expertise, and resources.  At BMT, we have surveyed wooden, steel, and iron-hulled vessels in preparation for repair, restoration, and modification.  Our engineers are skilled at:

  • Identifying needed repairs and estimating costs
  • Assessing corrosion and rot conditions, developing recommendations for repair
  • Preparing specifications and drawings
  • Making replacement parts, including treenails and metal fasteners
  • Planning dry dock work
  • Conducting environmental assessments and recommendations
  • Developing documentation for bidding out construction efforts

BMT has the knowledge and experience necessary to assist your organization in acquiring new assets, maintaining existing vessels, or disposing of ships no longer able to be maintained.
