BMT Designers & Planners Wins American In-house Design Award

BMT Designers & Planners Inc., a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has been announced as a winner of the 2008 American In-house Design Awards.

The maritime consultancy's marketing brochure was amongst the winners of the awards, which received over 5000 entries. Sponsored by Graphic Design USA magazine, the awards recognize in-house design, marketing and communications departments for their contributions to their businesses and institutions.

Despite the company name, graphic design isn't the first thing that comes to mind when most people think of BMT Designers & Planners, a maritime consultancy originally founded to provide naval architectural design and engineering. Today, the company specializes in ship design and engineering, ship acquisition, advanced technology, environmental and safety consulting. Though graphic design is not considered a ‘specialty' service, it is a vital part of many projects.

Vice President of Operations, Steve Leavy, explains, "Graphic design has increasingly become integrated into our business deliverables to every client whether the project is IT, engineering, or conference planning. If the design is not part of the technical deliverable, it is an important part of delivering a professionally finished product."

BMT Designers & Planners' design department is directed by Nicole Brennan, designer of the award winning folder. She has more than 14 years of customer service experience in graphic design including time spent at the US Postal Service and Smithsonian. In recent years, however, her customer service is usually behind the scenes working for project managers. Over the last three years she has delivered a diverse collection of products from the BMT Whale Wheel, an animation of a Boom rest on a semi-submersible, numerous websites and user interfaces including a touch screen and company marketing material.

Brennan commented: "The challenge of working with the diverse goals of our clients lies in being able to switch modes between varying expectations on tight deadlines. One project and client, for example, may require a more conservative approach, while another client may be seeking a more innovative and adventurous product. It is a privilege to interface with so many bright and visionary people."
